  4.     Francisco Mendes Alves Filho knew he was going to be killed.
  5. The Amazon environmentalist had already escaped three attempts on
  6. his life. The fourth, just before Christmas, proved fatal. When
  7. Mendes, 44, stepped from his house in the Brazilian jungle town of
  8. Xapuri to take a shower in his backyard, a single shot cut him
  9. down. Two police guards assigned to protect him were in the house
  10. with Mendes' wife and two of their children.

  12.     Mendes had accused two wealthy landowner brothers, Darli and
  13. Alvarino Alves da Silva, of plotting to kill him. Last week Darli's
  14. son,  Darci Alves da Silva Perera, 21, confessed to assassinating
  15. Mendes. Police are convinced that Darci is trying to cover up for
  16. his father and uncle and have arrested seven other relatives and
  17. family friends in connection with the crime.

  19.     Mendes' death brought to 93 the number of people killed in land
  20. disputes this year in Brazil. Human-rights groups claim that gunmen
  21. hired by local landowners are to blame. Many victims, including
  22. lawyers, priests and union leaders like Mendes, had been resisting
  23. efforts by some landowners to turn large tracts of jungle into
  24. profitable grazing land.
